Combined Cadet Force

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a thriving co-curricular activity at Caterham School. It consists of Army and RAF Sections. Membership is optional and is open to all pupils from Third Year and above.

The CCF offers pupils the chance to develop powers of leadership, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance through military themed activities. We believe that the acquisition of these personal attributes will remain of value throughout the cadets' lives.

The CCF is a voluntary youth organisation and covers both a military and non-military syllabus including skill at arms, navigation, drill, fieldcraft (infantry skills), flying, signals, first aid, gliding, kayaking, sub-aqua, abseiling and methods of instruction to name but a few.

Training occurs during weekly parades in School, whole day and weekend training periods (field days), at annual military camps, on courses run by the Armed Forces specifically for cadets and through adventurous training expeditions arranged on an ad hoc basis. Cadets also have the opportunity to gain BTEC qualifications in Public Services.

Pupils join at the beginning of the Autumn Term for a four-week period after which, if it is agreed that they should continue, recruits choose between the Army or RAF sections. These recruits are expected to remain in the CCF for the rest of the academic year. On completion of this initial year, cadets may remain in the CCF on a year by year basis until they leave the School. Those pupils joining the Army Section will complete the major part of the Army Proficiency Certificate (APC) in the first three terms. Those joining the RAF Section will build up a knowledge of airmanship which has, in some cases, enabled pupils to gain RAF gliding scholarships.

The Ministry of Defence provides uniform (excluding boots, which must be purchased), weapons and ammunition, training advice and assistance, loans of stores and equipment and access to military transport. The School charges an annual subscription of £60 and occasionally there are additional small charges as contributions towards accommodation and food, etc on training camps.

Meet: Wednesdays during term 1915 hrs to 2115 hrs.
