GeographyThe Geography department at Caterham School consists of 5 teachers. At GCSE the department follows the Edexcel A specification (1312) and at AS and A2 level follows Edexcel A specification (8214 & 9214). BiographiesStuart Terrell BA (Hons) MPhil Head of Department Stuart graduated from Birmingham University in 1997 with a BA (Hons) in Geography and Sport and Exercise Science. He enjoyed being a student so much that he continued for two years to complete an MPhil in Recreation and Environmental Management. His experience of lecturing and tutoring undergraduates convinced him to embark on a teaching career and has never looked back. Having taught at St. Albans School for eight years, he joined the Caterham School Geography Department in 2007. He believes the subjects importance cannot be overstated in light of the current global crises that we are facing poverty, environmental degradation, global warming and the increasing frequency of hazards to name but a few. It can offer insight into the way in which our children can benefit from our actions, rather than pay for our mistakes. His other passions include hockey, cricket, rugby, hiking and music particularly if allowed to perform. Lindsay Redding BSc (Hons) Deputy Head Lindsay has taught Geography at Caterham for over 10 years and during her time has been Head of Beech Hanger (the girls' boarding house) and is now the Deputy Head. A graduate in Economics and Geography from University College, London, she moved into teaching following a 15 year career in marketing. Her move was inspired by a desire to impart her belief that "Geography informs the world around us and in which we operate; it has been, and is today critical in determining what humans do and where they do it - living, working, family activities and leisure." Rebecca Wallace MA Assistant Head of Fourth Year Rebecca graduated in Geography from Oxford University. Although she began her career in teaching, her decision to focus on her specialist subject of Urban Studies meant a move to the London Borough of Bromley to work as a town planner. Having recently completed a Masters in Town Planning she decided to return to teaching, particularly as it allows her to put her love of geography to good use. Rebecca believes that the environment is under pressure from the growing global population and that geography is an essential, ever important subject that enables us to understand the consequences of uncontrolled development and the impact this will have on our future. Andion Van Niekerk BA, Teacher of English, Geography and Games Head of Junior Boys Boarding Andion currently teaches Key Stage 3 geography and is the Boys Junior Boarding Housemaster. Andion holds a BA from the University of Pretoria (SA) and has previously taught in South Africa and Switzerland. A popular member of the department, his pupils enjoy his creative approach to the subject. Andion also teaches in the English Department and is Head of Junior Boys' boarding. Outside the classroom he may be found in the Gym, running the school circus club or helping in the boarding house. |
