Information Communication Technology
(ICT) The study of the technology used to handle information and aid communication. The phrase was coined by Stevenson in his 1997 report to the UK government and promoted by the new National Curriculum documents for the UK in 2000. Inspiring Confidence in Technology

We have 900 networked computers running Windows 7 and Office 2007. There are three dedicated IT rooms with a further 8 IT rooms in Science, Maths, History, 3-D Design, Geography, Music, Modern Languages and Art, along with pc clusters in the Library and Sixth Form areas. There is a language laboratory and every class has an interactive whiteboard.
Biographies
This Department consists of five graduates, two of whom have additional teaching qualifications, and three who are support staff with experience in all forms of hardware and software along with network management skills.
Paul Hoad, Director of ICT Development
Paul is a Maths and IT Graduate who left his Deputy Head commitments behind him and joined Caterham Senior School in 1998 as Director of ICT. His teaching expertise lies in Years 7 to 11, including GCSE. Along with that, he is responsible for developing new techniques and technologies within the department and the school as a whole. As well as Head of Department, Paul is also the team leader for the school Intranet and teaches students the art of website design. He also runs a PC club everyday either at lunch time or after school. He is the link teacher with the Prep School ICT Dept. and is regularly involved in running training courses for both parents and members of staff. He is a qualified ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) Assessor and helps both 6th formers and staff gain this qualification.
Malcolm Bailey BA (Hons) BEd - Head of Sixth Form ICT
A graduate from the University of Natal he has been at Caterham since 1990 and originally taught Geography rising to Head of Department. He has had a varied teaching career, latterly in the UK but prior to Caterham, in South Africa. His interest in ICT developed prior to joining Caterham School, where he taught Computer Studies to trainees as well as in-service teachers. A growing input into school data systems and management of the school database saw him change to teaching ICT. He is a qualified ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) Assessor. Malcolm is also overall responsible for the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Caterham.
John Baldwin, ICT Support Manager
John has spent most of his working career with British Telecom as a Radio Engineer, responsible for the design and installation of satellite radio equipment and BT's three main Satellite Earth Stations. It was while designing Control and Monitoring Systems that he gained his computer network experience. He is the Network Manager of the Senior and Prep Schools' Networks and has responsibility for network design and expansion as well as the day to day running. This includes ensuring network availability, security and functionality for Management, Academic and Admin staff as well as all pupils.
Robert Brooks, ICT Technician, with particular skills in Database Management
Robert holds a BSc.Hons. Degree in Electronics. He worked as a project manager in Satellite Earth Station Provision holding responsibilities for system design and performance, the installation of Super High Frequency radio communications equipment and remote control & monitoring systems for major projects at both Goonhilly and Madley Earth Stations. He retired from BT in 1996. Robert now works in the 'engine room' of the ICT Dept. maintaining and enhancing the school's computer equipment and systems. He has a notable talent for designing software applications for use throughout the school that provide effective and efficient systems management.
Tim Falkner, ICT Technician
Tim joined us in Summer 2004, shortly after qualifying as a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in Windows Server 2003. He has been working in IT since finishing his A Levels in 2001. Tim has been working in Education for the majority of his career so far, having previously worked at Warlingham School, but has also had experience in the travel, construction and communications industries, having worked for BT, Croudace and Chelsea Village Travel. Tim has programmed in both Visual Basic and Access, and has developed websites for various non-profit organisations, including Old Caterhamians RFC. Tim has responsibility for arranging presentation equipment throughout the school and providing technical support for presentations and assemblies, in addition to diagnosing and fixing problems with hardware and software. He also upgrades/maintains the School web filtering system and ISA server, along with deputising for the Network Manager when required.
Colin Hitchings, ICT Technician.
Colin is the newest member of the team, joining us in Summer 2007. He joined the School having completed 30 years service as a Police Officer, leaving from a post within the communications department. During his time in force he was involved in introducing computerized report writing and Total Station Surveying and CAD (computer aided design) packages to the force for its plan drawing needs. He was also involved with the introduction of command and control systems together with the new radio and GPS systems, as an end user in the communications department. During his time in the Police Force Colin completed a Master of Science degree. Colin is working alongside John, Robert and Tim with the network, telephone system of the school, presentations and to diagnose and fix problems with hardware and software.
