Caterham School pupils create a new school record for A*-A GCSE Grades

Pupils and teachers at Caterham School are celebrating a new record for A*-A grades in this year's GCSE results.

64.6% of GCSE grades were A*-A up from 59.9% last year and 56% in 2005.

Headmaster Julian Thomas said: "This is a terrific achievement by pupils and teachers. Our A* - C grades have been just under 100% for years but we have seen a steady improvement in A* - A grades to this record high of 64.6%. This reflects extremely well on the pupils who have put in so much hard work."

Mr Thomas continued: "The continued strength of the sciences showed through with those pupils taking Biology and Physics as separate subjects achieving 100% at A*-A with 84% achieving A*-A in Chemistry. Of course we did very well across our wide range of 25 subjects and, of the 112 pupils in the 5th Year, 89% achieved 8 or more A*-C grades. I was also encouraged to see that, although not included in our results, 21 pupils in our 4th Year (Year 10) achieved A*-A in Maths. However, whilst we are celebrating these results we do not overlook the fact that our main aim is to provide an excellent all-round education so that every pupil can achieve their full potential academically and socially." New records achieved in A-Level Results Summer 2007

The A-level results achieved by the pupils at Caterham School set new records and so continued to build on the success of previous years.

  • 43 (39%) pupils achieved 3 or more 'A' grades up from 35% last year.
  • 54% of the grades were 'A's compared to 53% last year.
  • 81% of the grades were 'A/B' up from 77% last year.
  • 95% of the grades were 'A-C' up from 93% last year.
  • 100% pass rate at grades 'A-E'
  • Thirteen pupils accepted at Oxford or Cambridge, with four more going to Imperial College.

Headmaster Julian Thomas said ''I am delighted that the commitment and diligence shown by the pupils has enabled them to achieve such outstanding results. In particular I am heartened by the number of pupils who have surpassed their, and our, high expectations. You will doubtless read unfounded comment in the press suggesting that A-Levels are becoming easier, however, I believe that these successes represent a genuine improvement. These students are taught well by teachers who are able to bring the best out of them. Therefore, far greater numbers are fulfilling their potential and I think that is a cause for celebration.

We are very proud of them all and wish them every success for the future.

It is too soon to be certain but it appears likely that, once again, over 90% of our pupils will be going to their first choice university with about 80% accepting a place at one of the 'Top Tier' universities. In many ways this is the most important aspect of these results.''

Mr Thomas continued, 'It is also encouraging to see that the Lower 6th have achieved our best AS results by a significant margin which bodes very well for the future.''

Mr Thomas added ''While we are naturally delighted with the results, I would not want to lose sight of the fact that we aim to provide an excellent all-round education so that every pupil can achieve their full potential academically and socially. Our main aim is to develop the pupil as a whole person thereby helping to prepare them for their future life. ''
