The Swimming PoolWhether you are a serious swimmer, someone who wants to get fit or simply enjoy a leisurely swim, you’ll find there’s something for you. Our swimming pool is 25 metres long by 13 metres wide and can accommodate almost any aquatic activity, including competitive swimming galas to Amateur Swimming Association national recommended standards. The 110,000 gallons of water in the pool is regulated at a comfortable 29?C (84?F), and is filtered, heated and chemically treated every 21/2 hours. The water is cleansed by a combination of chlorine and ultra violet light. The ultra violet element is a recent development in the field of pool water treatment, boasting a 99.9% bacterial sterilisation rate whilst reducing fumes and maintaining water clarity. Our Lifeguards are trained in accident prevention, aquatic rescue and first aid who undertake responsibility for the supervision and safety of those using the swimming pool. All lifeguards hold the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, which exceeds national recommended standards. The number of lifeguards present on poolside is dependent on the number and ability level of those swimming. Fitness SuiteThe fully air conditioned fitness suite contains an impressive combination of both cardiovascular and resistance equipment chosen for its reliability, flexibility and ease of movement. Before using the fitness suite you must first complete a health questionnaire and induction course. There are many health benefits to be gained when you exercise regularly, but before you increase your level of physical activity it makes sense to look at your present state of health. For most people physical activity should not pose any problem or hazard. Our special questionnaire is designed to identify the small number of people for whom increased physical activity might be inappropriate or those who should seek medical advice concerning the type of activity most suited to their level of fitness. Once your health questionnaire has been checked, accompanied by an instructor, you will be shown how to adjust, programme and use each piece of equipment correctly. Upon completion of this induction you will be able to use the suite competently and safely at your leisure. After having completed your Fitness Suite induction and having become acquainted with all the equipment, you can have a personal programme designed to meet your chosen objectives. The Sports HallOur main sports hall can accommodate almost every indoor sport to national governing body standards. These include badminton, tennis, netball, 5-a-side football, basketball, volleyball, cricket and hockey. The hall fittings are designed to suit the badminton court layout. All lighting lies outside the perimeter of the court, reducing glare when looking up and the side walls are green so white shuttlecocks can easily be seen. The flooring is a semi-sprung taraflex sports surface. The cushioning provided by this surface reduces the risk of impact injuries whilst maintaining a comfortable playing surface, ideal for all sports. The Stephen Smith RoomThe Stephen Smith Room (previously known as the Activity Studio), is a multi-purpose open plan carpeted room ideal for almost any activity, party or function. Fully air conditioned, it has access to the first floor external balcony, which commands a panoramic view of the school and grounds. The room also contains a kitchen area suitable for serving food and drinks. Stephen Smith, the former Headmaster of Caterham School, returned to the school on 10th October 1997 to officially open the Stephen Smith Room. Mr Smith enjoyed a distinguished sporting career particularly in Rugby in which he was capped for England several times and captained Cambridge University, Hampshire, the Barbarians, Richmond and the Indian RFU team. The Synthetic Turf PitchThe STP is not a regular programmed part of the membership scheme, although we do offer use of the tennis courts during the summer holiday period. The cost will be £2.50 per court per hour for members, plus an additional 50 pence supplement for each non-sports centre member player. The School Squash CourtThe Squash court is the most recent addition to the sports facilities on offer. It has been fully refurbished and is available to the school community all year round.
