Miss Rachel Hart
Term: Autumn, Spring & Summer
Teams: Open, U15, U14, U13, U12 (boys & girls)
Swimming is a popular sport which takes place throughout the year. There are boys and girls swimming teams in all age groups. The fixture list is extensive and includes local schools and schools from the wider South East region. Most galas take place in the Autumn and Spring terms. In November and February, we host over ten schools for the District Swimming Championships. Caterham teams have won the overall boys and girls combined trophy on many occasions.
One of the main events in the calendar is the Bath & Otter Cup, which is held in March at the National Pool at Crystal Palace. In 2013, both our senior girls and boys squads qualified for their respective medley relay finals against over sixty top independent schools from across the UK. Another highlight of the calendar is taking part in the Surrey Individual and Relay Championships in September and February each year.
We enjoy the use of our own pool, which offers a 6 lane 25m pool and viewing gallery. There are three training sessions a week, one lunchtime session, one early morning session and one after school session. Our swimming coaches are highly experienced and well qualified specialists who are dedicated to developing individuals and the sport within the school.
Swimming is also taught in mixed PE Curriculum lessons to all year groups up to the Fifth Year where it becomes optional. Towards the end of the Autumn term, the Inter-House competition is held which encourages participation and is always a closely contested and enjoyable event.
Swimming has a strong tradition at Caterham, and part of that tradition is the Darby Medal. Dating back to 1899, each year the fastest six girls and fastest six boys in the school compete over a distance of 150 metres to be crowned champion and be awarded their medal on Speech Day each year.
Whilst being very proud of our swimming tradition, we are ambitious to develop the sport even further in order to provide the best provision for our swimmers and achieve the highest standards possible.
