Expectations and opportunities

Music Scholars are expected to play a minimum of two instruments (including voice) and as such, they are involved in the busy co-curricular programme throughout the year. A firm commitment to the music department is expected and allows for the many benefits afforded to our scholars.

Music Scholars are often required to represent the school in a variety of ways: at inter-school performances, in local and national music festivals, as ambassadors for the school at open days and other events, in recordings and videos for online distribution and on social media.

The flair and confidence for musical performance from a Music Scholar also inspires and encourages younger and less experienced pupils at both the Senior and Prep Schools and a willingness to mentor and support is an important part of the role, particularly at 13+ and 16+.

There are high musical expectations for Music Scholars; a dedication to progressing on 1st and 2nd instruments/voice with a view to achieving high marks at any graded examinations, exemplary commitment to any ensembles, enthusiasm for learning challenging musical works, willingness to appear and perform as a soloist and at 16+, a willingness to lead or assist with the running of smaller ensembles.

Music Scholars are fully supported by the Music Staff and are mentored and supported to achieve these expectations. Other activities offered to Music Scholars include; accompanying, musical composition/songwriting sessions with our Composer in Residence, conducting, priority use of the Recording Studio and the opportunity to assist Music Staff in the preparation of concert programming.

Further details about the audition can be found on the ‘Guidelines and audition details’ document.

We look forward to receiving applications from enthusiastic and talented musicians and to furthering their already successful musical profiles. The Music Department is friendly and nurturing with staff who are passionate about Music and understand the pressures and demands of school life. Music Scholars flourish at Caterham School and represent the absolute enjoyment of music-making.
