EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITIES OF MEDICINE
This intellectually stimulating two-week programme offers students an introduction to the changing world of modern medicine. Through academic lectures and scientific workshops, students will explore how science and innovation are transforming the way we understand, prevent and treat disease.
Students will investigate the biological basis of disease, developing their understanding of medicine and healthcare. They will examine how scientists determine whether medical interventions are safe and effective, and learn more about how treatments are developed through testing and clinical trials. This course is ideal for students who want to know more about medicine, the human body, and future careers in healthcare.
The programme then looks to the future of medicine, with a particular focus on how emerging technologies and the inventions of tomorrow can be combined with traditional medical practice to develop new approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Students will explore technologies such as artificial intelligence, genomics, personalised medicine and wearable devices, considering how they could improve patient outcomes while addressing questions of safety, ethics, cost and access.
Working in teams, students will investigate a significant health challenge and identify an unmet need. Supported by their mentors, they will develop a scientifically credible Medical Innovation Proposal, considering the evidence, feasibility, safety, accessibility and potential impact of their idea. The programme culminates in a Medical Innovation Showcase, where students present their proposals through a scientific presentation.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a stronger understanding of modern medicine and scientific research, alongside the ability to interpret evidence, think critically about complex problems and communicate scientific ideas with clarity and confidence.
