House Drama Competition
Caterham Houses gathered in the Humphreys Theatre for the prestigious House Drama Competition last week. The boards were trod by actors and non-actors alike, resulting in a terrific range of performances from Shakespeare to devised, impressions of teachers and anything in-between.
The monologues offered us anything from Luca Guadagnino performed by Max K. to the comedy of Blue Tongue performed by Ben S. Florence R. triumphed with a comedic contemplation of whether life was worth it or not, all from the comfort of a tanning bed.
Duologues were wonderfully diverse, spanning Hamlet’s confrontation with his father from Josh G. and Harry G to the Nolan masterpiece Inception from Smirty M. and Saanya P. However, there could only be one winning pairing and Emily S. with Scarlet B. was that pairing. Their performance was a fascinating reflection on time, memory and what the future might look like.
Lastly, and perhaps most humorously, came the devised pieces. In third place was Aldercombe with some classic school-based satire, providing some gentle mockery of a few favourite faces. Second place was taken home by Harestone with a bizarre reimagining of the hit TV show The Traitors, featuring anyone from Donald Trump and Ed Sheeran to Professor McGonagall. However, taking first place was Ridgefield helmed by George M. Their use of ensemble, imaginative interpretation of the theme ‘Dreams and Reminiscence’, and narrative wit showed talent, teamwork, and dedication.
Ridgefield continue their winning streak in House Drama and have defended the trophy for yet another year. Well done to all those who took part, it is always daunting to perform under the lights, and it made for a terrific evening of comedy, tragedy and much, much more.
