Choral Splendour at Arundel Cathedral

Choral Splendour at Arundel Cathedral

The choral recital by ETS and Chamber Choirs at Arundel Cathedral, was the ideal setting for their programme of choral masterpieces. Set within the breathtaking grandeur of one of England’s most magnificent ecclesiastical buildings, the performance was an inspiring setting to explore some great choral works

Notes soared through the cathedral’s lofty arches; it was a joy to see our young singers’ faces. The programme, featuring works by English composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir Edward Elgar, Sir Hubert Parry, and Sir John Tavener, was both ambitious and uplifting — matching the venue’s spiritual and acoustic majesty.

Special praise must go to the singers who rose to the challenge of singing in such a resonant space. Their ability to adapt and perform with clarity and expression in such a demanding environment was commendable.

ETS, in particular, deserves recognition, with many new singers performing in such a space for the very first time. Their energy, focus, and commitment were evident throughout the recital. Our young singers blended seamlessly with their more experienced peers, contributing to a sound that was powerful and ethereal.

The experience clearly left a lasting impression on the pupils, many of whom were visibly awed by the sheer scale and beauty of Arundel Cathedral. The grandeur of the architecture and the stained-glass windows were beautiful.

Warm thanks are also due to the staff and clergy of Arundel Cathedral for their kind hospitality and support. Their generous welcome helped create a supportive atmosphere, allowing the music to truly shine. The generosity of parents, whose donations contributed to the cathedral’s ongoing work and preservation is much appreciated.

This recital was a powerful reminder of the importance of live performance in such historic spaces. It was not only a showcase of Caterham School’s choirs but also an enriching cultural experience for all who attended. We look forward eagerly to the choirs’ next venture — and to seeing these talented young singers continue to thrive.
