What We’re Reading!
As part of our championing of reading, pupils are sharing what they have been reading recently, reviewing the great, the ones to avoid and the un-put-down-able. This will be a regular segment in the newsletter – perfect for suggestions at home or ideas for Christmas presents!
Research shows that peer-to-peer recommendations are the most powerful tool for encouraging reading for pleasure, which in turn is proven to be one of the most effective ways of pupils improving their attainment across all their subjects (not just English). However, on a national scale, from Third Year onwards, schools see a marked decline in pupils reading. We are therefore committed to challenging these trends and need parental support to achieve it: if you would like to learn more strategies to encourage your children to read, do watch out webinar on nurturing young readers.
Cyndy C
Cinder By Melissa Myers
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“Fantasy/romance/dystopian book set in the future in Beijing. The main character is cyborg and somehow ends up meeting the Prince of the country and so on so forth. This book is based on the classic story of Cinderella but with a plot twist and cliffhanger at the end (there is 5 more books to this series if you want to find out what happens). I do recommend it because it is quite interesting how this new world works and has futuristic themes but I wouldn’t recommend because this book was kind of cliché (I guessed the plot halfway through).
Lexie B
Where sleeping girls lie
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Twisty thriller with great plot. I would recommend as the characters are relatable and it’s easy to get into. High school mystery novel with many plot twists.
Clemmie F
Frankenstein
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Slow to start but one of the most unique novels.
This novel is about a obsessive scientist that yearns to answer impossible questions about morals and the limitations of science, except his biggest achievement soon goes very wrong.
I would recommend this because it is a one-of-a-kind story, with a rare narrative perspective.
