Tour of the Cutty Sark!

On Friday, 29 pupils from the First Year Scholars Society enjoyed a day in Greenwich, exploring themes of voyage, exploration, and navigation that complement their course sessions.

The morning began at the National Maritime Museum, where pupils revisited ideas of trade and empire discussed in previous sessions. They also appreciated the chance to see the astrolabe referenced in the first session of this term. They then toured the Cutty Sark, trying their hand at plotting the ship’s historic journey from Australia—some even managed to beat the original captain’s time!

Lunch was enjoyed in the glorious autumn sunshine by the Cutty Sark, with a few pupils adding a “seaside” twist to their sandwiches with a bag of chips.

In the afternoon, the group climbed the hill to the Royal Observatory, the highlight of the trip. Here, pupils explored the famous Harrison Marine Timepieces, deepening their understanding of latitude, longitude, and their impact on global exploration and trade.

Pupils were engaged throughout and many expressed that they wished they could have stayed longer—a gratifying sign of the trip’s success.
