Win at Royal Albert Hall Japan Society competition

This term, the Junior and Inters Art Scholars took part in a poster competition in association with the Royal Albert Hall and The Japan Society to celebrate the return of the Grand Sumo Tournament to the UK.
Sumo is a Japanese form of full-contact wrestling, in which two wrestlers must push their opponent outside of the ring or by forcing them to the ground to win. The sport has existed for thousands of years and has many deep-rooted traditions that can still be observed even in modern sumo tournaments today. Sumo is so culturally significant, that it has even been declared as Japan’s national sport.
There are six official tournaments that take place across Japan every year. These tournaments draw crowds of fans from not just Japan but from around the world. The Royal Albert Hall will be hosting the Grand Sumo Tournament this year. This is the second time that an official Basho Tournament has ever left Japan; the first time being in 1991 and at The Royal Albert Hall.
Pupils were asked to design a poster that included elements that represented sumo, Japan and the UK, which incorporated either landmarks, national colours, natural patterns, symbolic animals, cultural motifs or food. These were not allowed to be digital but could be in any practical media.

I am very pleased to announce that Bethany Cheung in 3rd year was awarded 3rd place for her cherry blossom design, and Yara Valentinova in 4th year was awarded highly commended for her design. Bethany wins a goodie bag and a voucher to spend at the Japan Centre in either Leicester Square or Westfield Shopping Centre, London.
