What We’re Reading!
As part of our championing of reading, pupils are sharing what they have been reading recently, reviewing the great, the ones to avoid and the un-put-down-able. This will be a weekly segment in the newsletter – perfect for suggestions at home!
Molly G
The Great Gatsby
⭐️⭐️
Quite complex but interesting theme
I’d recommend for the plot of the book, but I wouldn’t recommend because the language is complex and takes a while to read. It is a mysterious novel set in the ‘Jazz Age’ in America and it explores status.
Jake D
Fahrenheit 451
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A dystopian future where books are outlawed and burned yet one of the book burners decides that he likes books more than he thought he did and starts hoarding them.
It was a bit boring to begin with, but it was interesting what the characters thought of books and how important they thought the books were in the face of people trying to kill them for it.
I wouldn’t recommend it for people who don’t like reading because it is slow paced, but I would recommend it because it is interesting, and it gives a different point of view on books in general.
Luca Hollidge
Mr Mercedes
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Good, interesting detective case, however feels the same as other books of the same genre not overly amazing, however it does have its moments of excitement. I would recommend if you haven’t read many detective books before as is a good base and not to complicated. About a retired detective who goes back to an old case he never solved.
EdenL
Pompeii
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Constant tense moments through 4 different perspectives, tragedy isn’t my type of thing.
Would recommend mix of history and fiction, realistic setting.
About an engineer tackling political issues that links to the aqueduct he’s fixing, underlying cause of the volcanic eruption in ad79.
Rupert M
The Caves of Steel
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very easy to read especially for a book written in the 1950s and very engaging with constant cliffhangers. I would recommend this because it’s an easy read with lots of plot twists.
Athena Shi
How to argue with a cat
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Easy read and could help with presenting your opinions easier as it shows how to argue and present yourself in a respectful and straight to the point manner. I’d recommend it to anyone that would want to improve their speaking and persuasion.
