Charles I Under the Spotlight with the CLIO Society
On 5 May at CLIO Society, we were so pleased to have Dr David Smith from Selwyn College, Cambridge speaking about ‘Charles I: Martyr or Tyrant’. For those studying the British Civil Wars for A level, it was a fantastic experience to consolidating our knowledge and gain insight from a world specialist. Dr Smith’s talk spanned from the ascension of Charles I to his trial and execution in 1649, allowing us to gain rare insight into how and why Charles I is such a controversial figure in history.
Overall, the talk gave us insight into why Charles I is an important monarchical figure, and how religion, parliament, and his own personality caused his eventual downfall. CLIO members also enjoyed the Q&A session with Dr Smith and we hope he will return to Caterham next year. Abi, Sophie and Daisy asked Dr Smith in themselves and were delighted he made the journey.
