Puzzles, Patterns and Perseverance

This term’s Fizzy Maths event brought together 65 enthusiastic Year 5 pupils from six local primary schools for an afternoon of mathematical challenge and collaboration in the Library.

Representatives from St John’s, Furzefield, Audley, St Francis, Marden Lodge and Chestnut Park joined forces with Caterham’s team of Maths Ambassadors from the Fifth Year and Lower Sixth. Having worked through a series of enrichment activities in their schools throughout the term, the pupils were ready to tackle a fresh set of problems designed to test their reasoning, resilience and creativity.

Working in mixed-school groups, pupils explored a range of mathematical puzzles and investigations that encouraged logical thinking, teamwork and perseverance. The activities required them to develop strategies, spot patterns and refine their ideas, demonstrating that success in mathematics often comes through curiosity and determination as much as technical skill.

Led by Miss Vijayakumar, Fizzy Maths continues to be a valued part of Caterham’s outreach programme. Now firmly established as an annual fixture, the initiative provides an opportunity for able young mathematicians from across the local community to extend their learning, build confidence and discover the enjoyment that comes from tackling challenging mathematical problems together.

A huge thank you goes to our Maths Ambassadors, whose enthusiasm and support helped make the afternoon such a success.
