Art Scholar Anja – First in Fashion!
Established in 2010, Young Fashion Designer UK is an exciting national competition which focuses on enhancing the talent of pupils to showcase and promote exceptional work produced during GCSE and A level courses as well as for pupils aged 11 – 14 studying Art or Fashion and Textiles throughout the United Kingdom. The competition is run by centres in the South and Midlands who are committed to providing a platform for young fashion designers.
The theme was ‘Wear The Change’ and pupils were encouraged to breathe new life into old garments, household textiles or discarded materials by transforming them into fashion-forward pieces. From charity shop finds to unloved uniforms, the challenge was to reimagine waste as wearable art – proving that style doesn’t have to cost the earth.
Pupils were required to produced 4 design sheets, exploring research on upcycling, sustainability and transformation, development of experimentation of materials using sustainable techniques, designing four outfits that reimagine waste as fashion-forward looks; and documentation and creation of a real-life piece using repurposed materials.
Winners from each group were announced last week and were invited to attend the live final which took place at Kent College over the weekend.
I am very excited to share that Anja V in Third Year was awarded first place in her age category on Saturday, this is the second time she has won first prize. Her work demonstrated clear research and thought and exciting design and making skills. She was also required to create a garment out of a piece of fabric, live and on the spot, during Saturdays live final.
Please join me in congratulating her on yet another fantastic Art Scholars competition win!
