A Summer Twilight Concert
Our Twilight Concert had a focus on chamber music, which is increasingly becoming more prominent in our music department, with many pupils playing in a variety of trios and quartets. The Soderberg Quartet began the concert with a beautifully poised performance of You’ll Never Walk Alone from Carousel, while the Wilberforce Quartet gave an assured reading of the Scherzo movement from Beethoven’s String Quartet in F major, Op. 18 No. 1. The Flute Choir contrasted this with an arrangement of Moon River, showing excellent ensemble skills.
We then heard from two talented piano soloists, with Calise J giving a characterful performance of Spooky Wood Hollow, and Eugenie C showing great maturity in her playing of the first movement of Beethoven’s E major Piano Sonata. Joel G sang the magical Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, followed by George N playing the sublime Blues for Benni by Eduard Putz, showing great command of the style. The Junior Piano Trio, giving their first performance, played two movements from Shostakovich’s evocative Five Pieces, before the Second Year Trio rounded off the evening with a selection of stylish Swedish Dances by Max Bruch. Well done and congratulations to all pupils who performed.
