Harry Explores the World of Game Development

We are delighted to share the experience of Harry, who recently completed an exciting industry placement with a BAFTA-winning mobile games studio, EA Playdemic.

The placement, which Harry sourced himself, gave him a structured introduction to the games industry and an insight into how a professional games studio operates. Throughout the week, he explored a range of careers across Game Art, Game Design, Programming and Producing, while developing valuable skills in teamwork, creativity, communication and problem solving.

A key part of the experience was the opportunity to learn directly from experienced industry professionals. Harry attended talks and Q&A sessions with staff from different disciplines, gaining a greater understanding of the variety of roles involved in creating a successful game.

He was also challenged to develop a game concept based on the idea he had submitted as part of his application. With guidance from the studio team, he explored how an initial idea can be developed into a playable experience, contributing to the creative and technical process throughout the week. The placement culminated in him showcasing his game to the Producers and Head of Studio Operations.

Harry particularly impressed the team with his passion for programming and strong problem-solving skills. From the outset, he showed genuine curiosity about how games are built, asking thoughtful questions and engaging with the technical aspects of game development. His game concept was well considered, incorporating clear mechanics and creative ideas that demonstrated his enthusiasm for the subject.

The placement also provided an excellent opportunity for Harry to develop his wider employability skills such as working as part of a team, contributing to discussions, communicating his ideas and collaborating with other members of the team and, by the end of the placement, Harry had developed a much stronger understanding of the game development process and how a professional studio operates.

Harry made a positive impression throughout the week. His experience has given him valuable insight into the games industry, strengthened his employability skills and allowed him to explore his passion for programming in a professional environment.

We are incredibly proud of Harry’s commitment and the progress he made during this exciting opportunity, and we hope that the experience will inspire him as he continues to explore future pathways in technology and game development.
