Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

This year’s Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was magnificent — a truly memorable culmination to the term and a shining example of the choral excellence within our school community.

The service opened with First Year pupil Heath K delivering a beautifully poised solo of Once in Royal David’s City. His clear, expressive singing set a reflective and reverent tone as the choir processed by candlelight, filling the church with a warm glow and glorious harmony.

Across the evening, the readings were delivered with confidence and sincerity, each one enhancing the sense of tradition and storytelling at the heart of this cherished service. Musically, the programme was exceptional. Chamber Choir and ETS offered a series of stunning anthems, including Harold Darke’s much-loved In the Bleak Midwinter, made all the more memorable by a mesmerising solo from Upper Sixth pupil George M. Their performance was truly spellbinding.

A particular highlight was the premiere of The Pembroke Carol by composer Anna Lapwood — a haunting yet magical new carol that captivated the entire congregation. In contrast, ETS brought energy and brightness with their lively rendition of Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, demonstrating their impressive versatility.

One of the evening’s most uplifting moments came when the entire Second Year joined the choirs for a triumphant performance of Masters in This Hall. Their commitment, enthusiasm, and musicality were evident to all, and every Second Year pupil deserves high praise for their contribution.

The professionalism of the whole service was remarkable, and it truly served as the perfect way to draw the term to a close. The church was packed, and the congregation gave generously in support of St John’s Church, to whom we are sincerely grateful for hosting us once again.

Above all, huge congratulations must go to the singers of Chamber Choir and ETS, whose dedication, skill, and passion made this festival such a wonderful, uplifting experience for everyone present. This was a celebration of choral music, community, and shared joy. A very merry Christmas to all from our choirs and the music department.
