Getting Hands-On with Biology
Lower Sixth pupils Giselle and Svara have recently set up Biology Beyond, a lunchtime club for Third and Fourth Year pupils, with the aim of taking biology beyond the school curriculum and making it as interactive and engaging as possible. They were delighted to see so many pupils attend the first sessions and were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm for getting involved. This week, pupils took part in a squid dissection, giving them the opportunity to explore squid anatomy first-hand and put their biological knowledge into practice. They even got to use the squid’s own ink to write their names using its pen, the squid’s internal shell-like structure!
The club also aims to introduce pupils to the wider pathways and possibilities within biology, from biotechnology and genetics to marine biology, ecology, neuroscience and biomedical research. Biology Beyond runs every Wednesday lunchtime, with plenty more hands-on activities planned for the coming weeks. Any pupils wishing to get involved should head to B1 at the beginning of Wednesday lunches!
