Inspiring Young Mathematicians
Last Friday, 13 March, Caterham Mathematicians celebrated Pi Day with pupils from Oakhyrst Grange School. Our Maths ambassadors, Alex L, Charlotte S, Liam H, Leo H, Matthew C, Ethan T, Rares A and Avery C shared their passion for mathematics with Year 4, 5, and 6 pupils, inspiring them on their mathematical journeys and assisting them with various maths activities. Here are a few statements from our Maths ambassadors regarding their experiences on the day:
‘Volunteering for Pi Day at Oakhyrst Grange School was a great experience. It was exciting to present my math’s journey to the pupils and to encourage younger pupils to embrace the joys and challenges of maths. Helping the primary school pupils was also very satisfying and I enjoyed talking to them along with learning to see maths from their perspective.’ Liam H
‘I really enjoyed my time helping younger versions of myself with fun maths, especially on Pi day. It has also been a great experience seeing how children grow up in a different culture and environment than what I’m used to and grew knowing back in my home country.’ Rares A
‘Going to the local primary to help with an enriching activity for the children, in honour of pi day, was not only a fun day for them but also myself as someone considering a teaching pathway in the future. The skills I picked up from this experience I believe are going to very useful in the future, in terms of helping people in general.’ Avery C
‘I had a great day out in supporting and helping the Year 4s, 5s and 6s in their Pi Day Event which I thoroughly enjoyed. The children were all very nice and brought a smile to everyone’s day. The teachers were also fantastic, and it was good to see everybody engaging in the maths tasks at hand with the help from A Level Lower Sixth pupils. Thank you to everyone at Oakhyrst Primary School and for those sweets given out at the end as well as Mrs Vijayakumar for organising this event.’ Matthew C
