Learning Beyond the Classroom
The final few weeks of the Summer Term have showcased what EDGE is all about: giving pupils meaningful opportunities to think creatively, solve real-world problems and learn beyond the classroom.
Our recent Summer School at the University of Nottingham, one of EDGE’s key partners, was a particular highlight. Pupils experienced an entrepreneurial university culture first-hand, exploring how ideas become ventures with genuine social impact. Meeting students and graduates who are developing their own enterprises showed that purpose-driven innovation is something young people can start shaping today.
On the final day, pupils also visited the University of Nottingham’s Virtual and Immersive Production Studio, where they explored the transformative potential of virtual reality in education. Working within Nottingham’s state-of-the-art VR environments, pupils experienced how emerging technologies are reshaping learning and gave pupils an inspiring glimpse into the future of education, research and innovation.
Our sincere thanks go to Professors Andrew Bacon OBE, Professor Simon Mosey, Dr Isobel O’Neil and Professor Laura Bond for creating such an engaging and inspiring programme.
Back at Caterham, we hosted the EDGE Museum of Memories, which demonstrated the same spirit of curiosity and creativity. Designed and curated entirely by our First-Year pupils, the museum explored the science and psychology of memory alongside the history of Caterham School from the 1950s to the present day. Visitors were invited to add their own memories to the Tree of Memories, making the exhibition a living record of our community. The museum also marked an exciting milestone for our EDGE Sixth Form enterprise, Hive & Hills, as pupils made the very first sales of the handmade beeswax candles they had designed, produced and branded themselves. It was a proud moment that perfectly captured the EDGE ethos: combining creativity, entrepreneurship and authentic learning to bring ideas to life.
Both experiences reflect the core purpose of EDGE: creating authentic opportunities for pupils to explore ideas, collaborate with others and make meaningful connections between their learning and the wider world.
