Lower Sixth Outreach Opportunities
Over the course of last term, during their EDGE lessons, the Lower Sixth have participated in Outreach sessions with local Primary schools. The visiting pupils have enjoyed a series of different activities, including coding, Physics and Biology. This weekly event in the Science department has been a positive experience for all those involved. This is what three of the Lower Sixth have to say.
“Over the past 3 weeks I have worked with two schools, Furzefield and St John’s. We have been teaching the children how to use the robots and how to code them to do whatever they like. Lots of them caught onto the programming bit quickly and it seemed like they really enjoyed it. The sessions consist of firstly, having a go on the app EdgeU, adding blocks of code into the programme to get the robot to do all different things (such as speak or move forward). Once the groups had got the hang of how the coding worked, we lay out the mazes that we had created. The children had to try to complete these mazes by programming the robot to do what it says on the maze (like maths sums or geography knowledge). I have really enjoyed leading this activity, it has been so nice helping others. Not only has this experience been fun, it’s also been enriching for me too. I had used scratch previously (in prep school), but now I know how to code these fun robots!!! I think the purpose of us teaching the year 4s and 5s, is to direct their skills to something else, something less academic and more fun. The robots also test their resilience and teamwork skills, having to work with their friends and problem solve to complete the maze. Overall, I have really enjoyed this whole experience and thank you for giving me the opportunity to do it.” Ava D
“I had an amazing time helping with the Physics sessions this term. The children learned about how the length of a pendulum can affect the period. Also, they learned how to create parachutes and had a mini competition to see who could make the best parachute. I thought it was a very good way to connect with people outside of school, while also allowing me to venture outside of my comfort zone.” Will C
“I had a wonderful time teaching the students from another primary school all about Biology, one of my most passionate subjects. During the sessions, all of them were really engaged in class and would often ask me questions about things they are curious about. For example, when one of the students looked at a honeybee wing, she asked me what the little hairs are for! They were all so sweet and it was a meaningful experience for me to be able to have this opportunity to help teach younger children about Biology! Overall, this was a great experience and through this I have learnt so much about how to communicate and lead when doing the practical.” Winnie K
Many thanks to all those who have made these sessions possible.
