Music Scholars impress

Twenty of our finest music scholars wowed the audience at the annual Music Scholars’ Concert in the Wilberforce Hall. A fantastic variety of music from the classical repertory was on display, from the poise and delicacy of the unaccompanied baroque violin music of Telemann, through the rich and evocative harmonies of Debussy’s solo piano music, to Hindemith’s unique and expressive chromaticism.

The music scholars’ programme at Caterham serves to develop the performance skills of our very talented musicians at school, and this annual concert is a showcase of their achievements. The audience was clearly hugely impressed by the variety of music heard, and it is wonderful to see our younger scholars performing alongside their older peers. Not only was the music mature in nature; it was performed with great maturity.

For the first time at this event, alongside solo musicians, we heard from our two string quartets, in which several of our scholars play. We were treated to the theme and variations movement of Haydn’s Emperor Quartet and the opening movement of Beethoven’s F major quartet, Op. 18 No. 1.

Congratulations to all the performers on a fabulous evening of music making: Marble C, Eugenia H, Cecilia Q, Catherine Y, Emily D, Winnie K, Abi P, Jessica C, Alfred D, Mavis C, Holly C, Lia N, Mathilde G, Heath K, Amaaya P, Hongqi Z, Alejandro G-B, Raymond O, Florence N.
