RAF Caterham Cadets at ‘Super’ Camp!
Towards the end of the summer holidays, six cadets and one officer from Corps’ RAF Section were fortunate enough to be invited to join a London and Southeast Region ‘Super’ Camp. They spent the week at RAF Leeming, an active RAF station in North Yorkshire, alongside cadets and officers from Air Training Corps squadrons from Kent, Sussex and Middlesex. In total there were over 60 cadets taking part.
A busy programme stretched and stimulated the cadets throughout the week. Activities included a coveted chance to fly alongside an RAF pilot in air experience flying; shooting on ranges; adventurous training; and an opportunity to see the RAF in action with visits to Leeming’s various squadrons. Cadets not only got up close and personal with aircraft, including the BAE Hawk (of Red Arrows fame), but also had some hands-on experiences with the fire service and the station armoury.
At the end of a great week, our cadets gave their highlights:
v Cpl Dowdy (Fifth Year): “Watching the Hawks take off from outside the Air Traffic Control tower”
v Cpl Pond (Fifth Year): “I enjoyed the Section visits, getting to see how the RAF function”
v Cdt Popov (Fourth Year): “Going flying for the first time”
v Cdt Wade (Third Year): “I finally managed to win my blue shooting badge and my second Air Experience flight”
v Cdt Tagliarini (Third Year): “Getting to meet cadets from other squadrons”
v Cdt Patel (Third Year): “Visiting to the armoury”
Well done to all the cadets, and particular congratulations to Cdt Wade (Third Year), who received the ‘Most Improved’ award across all the 60 cadets on camp.
