Senior Music Scholars Impress
The beautiful setting of Wilberforce Hall provided the perfect backdrop for this year’s Music Scholars’ Recital at Caterham School, an evening that celebrated the remarkable talent, dedication and musicianship of our scholars from Fifth Year through to Upper Sixth.
The recital offered a rich and varied programme, showcasing an impressive breadth of repertoire and instrumental expertise. While several standout performances deserve special mention, every pupil performed with confidence, style and musical maturity, creating an evening of exceptional quality from beginning to end.
Many of our scholars are not only accomplished instrumentalists but also singers and multi-instrumentalists, and it was particularly impressive to see several pupils performing on their second or even third instrument. Such versatility is a testament to both their commitment and the vibrant musical culture that exists within the school.
Among the highlights of the evening was George (Fifth Year), whose thoughtful and assured performance of the first movement of Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A major, Op. 120 displayed both sensitivity and poise. Lia (Lower Sixth Form) brought warmth and colour to Lili Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps, while Florence (Lower Sixth Form) demonstrated impressive command and musical insight in the second movement of Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 2.
Raymond (Lower Sixth Form) captivated the audience with a compelling and confident interpretation of Chopin’s Ballade No. 3, Op. 47, and Yenah (Lower Sixth Form) gave a mesmerising performance of Ian Clarke’s Hypnosis, capturing the work’s distinctive atmosphere and technical demands. Mavis (Lower Sixth Form) impressed with Weber’s Concertino in E flat major, Op. 26, combining virtuosity with expressive musicianship, while Jessica (Upper Sixth Form) brought energy and brilliance to the first movement of Kabalevsky’s Violin Concerto in C major, Op. 48.
The concert was open to all, and we were delighted to welcome guests from a local preparatory school. It was wonderful to see our scholars performing not only as musicians but also as role models, inspiring younger pupils through their commitment and evident enjoyment of music-making.
The Music Scholars’ Recital was a fitting celebration of extraordinary talent at Caterham School, and all those who performed should be immensely proud of their achievements. We look forward with great anticipation to hearing these musicians again at future concerts.
