Success for Young Designers & Engineers
Over the last 2 years, our dedicated Sixth Form DT students have been working extremely hard on developing their practical skills and subject knowledge through a variety of design and build projects. A month ago, on a sunny August morning, they were all rewarded with fantastic A-Level results: All 6 students received either an A* or A grade in the demanding course, with 4 of them moving onto Design or Engineering based Degree courses at established Universities. Franchesca C did exceptionally well and secured her place at Cambridge University to start their newly developed ‘Design’ course. This BA(Hons) course combines architecture, engineering, and material science in one degree and is an exciting new area for our pupils to consider as they leave school.
As one set of students heads out of our workshops another group begins. Our Lower Sixth cohort is our largest ever with 11 pupils starting the product Design course. Early signs show that this group of young designers will push the department even further forward. We are also in the lucky position to be able to help mentor two Arkwright scholarship students within this year group: Josh B is being sponsored by the RAF within his award as he continues to study Product Design and Ollie N has been awarded a virtual scholarship as he progresses with Computer Science and Physics. The Arkwright Award is a national scheme that helps provide mentoring and sponsorship for the best young engineers in the country as they progress through their sixth form studies and onto university.
The future is looking bright for our creative Design and Engineering students; they will certainly be well placed for the ever-changing workplace that they will be entering in the years to come.
