Summer Courses for Alfred and Sophia

The summer holidays provided two of our Music Scholars with exciting opportunities to develop their musicianship beyond the school gates, as Alfred D (Fourth Year) and Sophia A (Third Year) took part in specialist music courses during the break.

Both pupils are already hugely committed members of the musical life of Caterham School. As Music Scholars, they contribute enthusiastically to a wide range of ensembles and performances, while also being dedicated choral singers. Their willingness to embrace new musical experiences over the summer is another reflection of their enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment to developing as musicians.

Alfred spent part of his summer at the Flutes en Vacances UK Student Summer Music Course, held at Earls Hall in Cockfield, Suffolk. The residential course brings together a small group of young woodwind players for an intensive and highly musical experience, with participants receiving individual attention as well as opportunities for ensemble playing and performance.

Alfred shone throughout the course, proving himself to be a fantastic and exceptionally keen participant. He threw himself wholeheartedly into the experience, making the most of the opportunity to learn from specialist musicians and to play alongside other young musicians who share his enthusiasm. His positive attitude, musicality and willingness to participate fully made him a real asset to the course. It was wonderful to see Alfred continuing to develop his confidence and musicianship in such a focused environment, and to see his enthusiasm for music extend well beyond the school term.

Meanwhile, Sophia A travelled to Warwick to take part in the inaugural Warwick Schools Foundation Summer Orchestra Course, bringing together young musicians for intensive ensemble rehearsals, sectional coaching and workshops, culminating in a performance for family and friends. The course attracted more than 130 young musicians from over 30 schools. Playing oboe, Sophia was part of the massed orchestra and relished the opportunity to perform a diverse range of repertoire. She also took on a leadership role within the woodwind section. This was an excellent opportunity for Sophia to develop not only her instrumental playing, but also her confidence and leadership skills. Sophia also performed solo passages within the orchestral repertoire, demonstrating the assurance and musical maturity that she brings to her playing. Her ability to contribute both as an individual musician and as part of a large ensemble was particularly impressive.

Their summer courses demonstrate the value of seeking out musical experiences beyond school: working with new teachers, meeting fellow young musicians, tackling unfamiliar repertoire and learning how to contribute positively to a new musical community. We are delighted that Alfred and Sophia chose to spend part of their summer immersed in music, and we look forward to seeing how these experiences continue to enrich their playing, singing and leadership at Caterham School in the year ahead.
