Darwin Society Inspiring Biologists

The Darwin Society’s mission is to inspire Biologists by taking A level Biology topics and relook at them at undergraduate degree level.  This week’s meeting was presented by Old Cat, Natalie W who has applied to Oxford to study Biochemistry.   She treated the record audience of 35 Upper Sixth, Lower Sixth and Fifth Year pupils to an in depth look at monosaccharides and explained the reaction mechanism behind basic specification content such as the Benedicts test and why it works for reducing sugars and not for non-reducing sugars.   Nat’s passion for Biochemistry was obvious and she showed just how massive the overlap is between Biology and Chemistry and how these subjects complement each other so well. 

Next week Issy S will be talking about the earliest evidence for surgery recently discovered, suggesting humans carried out basic surgery some 30,000 years ago.
