District Athletics Success

Friday 10 May saw the Schools Junior and Intermediate Athletics Teams attend the District meet at the K2 Arena in Crawley.  Three podium finishes for Rianna in the Discus; throwing a school record of 33.83m, The Shotput; another school record of 11.06 and capped off with a fine victory in the 200m saw the junior girls off to a strong start. This was backed up with further dominant performances from the impressive Jemima in the Discus, and Javelin. Genevieve in the 1500m finishing runner up, Grace also as district runner up and Sophie and Mina securing lots of valuable points over the five events that they shared. Sophie hurdling superbly early on to claim an impressive victory. This brilliant individual and team effort saw the junior girls team crowned as district champions.

The Intermediate girls also contained brilliant individual efforts from Lauren and Sharon finishing in first and second place respectively in the Shotput, scoring maximal points for their age group. The latter also being crowned district champion in the long jump with an impressive leap of 4.42m. Olivia finished a brilliant day with victory in the High Jump and Hurdles. Nicola (1500m) and Abbie (300m) both achieved places on the rostrum for their impressive and brave efforts in two very demanding events. Taylor and Zoe finished second and third respectively in their 200m during a very fast final. The girls’ team finishing the day at runner-up in the team standings, was a testament to these and many other endeavours.

The Junior boys shows real grit in their performances with the pick of the results going to Roman and Harry for their 1-2 finish in the Shotput to score maximal team points. Austin also impressed hugely with two podium finishes in two events he had never previously competed before in (Triple Jump & 300m).

The Intermediate Boys team saw the return of the dominant Fifth Year athletes bolstered with some exceptional Fourth Year performers, this year group having dominated the school circuit as champions since the First Year. Justin and Enzo completed the first brace of top two finished with dominance in the Discus. This was followed up with two outstanding runs from the gutsy and determined duo of Oliver and Tom also claiming the top two spots. With winning becoming a habit the sprint duo of Andrew and Nick took to the track, another 1-2 in the boys 200m saw Andrew take the crown with Nick in second place. Powerful displays of 400m running from Jonny and Will gained the team further points with Jonny also taking victory in the Shotput. Andrew popped up again with a victory in the Long Jump with Nick just behind him, this pair also finished strongly in the 100m. The Inter boys capped off the day with a barn-storming 4x100m victory securing their District victor status for another year.

The combination and contribution of all the schools athletes aided in Caterham being crowned as overall district champions.
